Departments will typically get fed into departments dropdowns across the system, otherwise departments may be used to determine approval routing and escalations.

Departments can be entered with parent-child relationships, meaning a full department structure can be implemented.

Departments can be applied against users in Control Panel -> Security -> Users and Groups.
