The standard approval route setups define a set of approval thresholds per role, however it may be the case that specific individuals also have limits on what they are able to approve. The system is able to automatically escalate approvals to the individual's supervisors up until the point where a supervisor has an approval threshold that is adequate for the submission.
To best explain how this function set works, we'll provide an example.
The approval route for this item will land on this user doing the approval.
Above would be the result if we don't consider individual approval limits at all. To see the scenario play out, let's understand the details of the intended approver and their supervisors - these details can be viewed and managed in system in the Manage Users screen in the Control Panel:
User: Papita Mitra
Approval limit: $50,000
Supervisor: Brendon Rother
User: Brendon Rother
Approval limit: $100,000
Supervisor: Bert Myburgh
User: Bert Myburgh
Approval limit: Unlimited
Supervisor: N/A
When using escalations there are two differents modes that can be used:
Include all inbetween supervisors in the approvals process
OR
Only include the final supervisor in the approval

To get the most out of this automated escalation, it's important that supervisors and financial approval limits are kept up to date. Depending on your project there may be an option to integrate with an existing system that captures these details.
